The Korean government has supported the creative industries related to the traditional cultural archetypes. The animation film ‘Kung Fu Panda (2008)’ regarding Chinese traditional culture was released by the DreamWorks studio, one of representative animation company in America. Since the great success of the ‘Kung Fu Panda I’, the ‘Kung Fu Panda II’ was produced in 2011 and the ‘Kung Fu Panda III’ is being produced with the cooperation with Chinese companies. This shows that the story telling of Chinese culture can be successful with the great response of world audiences. Why the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is successful world widely? In regard to this, this paper explores the ‘three steps promotion process of cultural archetypes for the recreation’ through literature reviews, and ‘Kung Fu Panda’ was analysed by focusing on the construction of characters and constitution of scenes in a cinematic way. I would suggest the way how to recreate our cultural archetypes for the successful animation film in the global stage through the case study about ‘Kung Fu Panda’.

한국은 세계화와 다원화의 시대를 맞아 국가적 지원과 함께 전통문화원형을 이용한 창작사업에 많은 투자 와 노력을 기울이고 있다. 중국 전통문화의 유, 무형의 원형을 소재로 한 ‘쿵푸판다’ (2008)는 미국의 대표 적인 애니메이션 회사인 드림웍스에 의해 제작되었으며, 세계적인 흥행과 함께 2008년 초기작이 나온 이 후 ‘쿵푸판다 2’ (2011)가 제작되었으며, 현재 ‘쿵푸판다 3’ 편이 중국과 합작으로 제작 중에 있다. 이는 기 존 서구문화 중심의 애니메이션 영화에서 아시아 문화권인 중국의 전통문화원형을 다룬 스토리텔링이 동, 서양의 경계를 넘어 세계적인 반응을 얻을 수 있음을 보여준다. 헐리우드적 애니메이션 제작기법을 통해 중국문화원형과 전통사상이 재현된 쿵푸판다가 왜 세계적으로 흥행할 수 있었을까? 이에 본 논문은 문헌 자료를 중심으로 한 선행연구를 통해 ‘문화원형의 3단계 창작 개발 단계도’를 도출하였으며, 이를 ‘쿵푸판 다’에서 재현된 중국 문화원형과 헐리우드의 제작기법을 캐릭터 구성과 장면 연출 기법을 중심으로 분석 하여 그 요인에 대해 알아보았다. 동양의 감성이 서구인의 시각과 기술에 의해 제작된 ‘쿵푸판다’의 사례 분석을 통해 향후 한국의 전통문화원형을 이용한 애니메이션 영화의 글로벌적 성공을 위한 방향을 제시하 고자 한다.
