This paper investigates how the number of lines on the go board increased to 19 through history. There is no comprehensive document on this subject in the Korean literature. On the basis of the time period in which Sun-ztu’sMathematica(孫子算經) was written, I deduce 19-line go game appeared before AD 473, at latest. By that time, 19-line go game must have been quite popular. Since then until the middle of the Tang Dynasty period, go games using 15, 17, 19-line boards co-existed. By the 7thcentury,19- linegogamespreadintoKoreaandJapan. I propose that the cosmological interpretation of 19-line go game contributed to the eventual domination of 19-line go game over 17-line go game.

역사적으로 바둑판의 규격이 어떤 경로로 19줄까지 커져 왔는지를 조사한다. 이 문제를 자세히 다루는 한국 문헌이 없고, 잘못된 정보들이 인터넷에 나돌아 다녀서 이 논문이 이것을 바로 잡는다. 손자산경(『孫子算經』)의 저작 연대에 근거해서, 19줄 바둑은 늦어도 서기 473년 이전에 생겼으며, 이 때에는 19줄 바둑이 상당히 보급되었다고 논증한다. 오래 동안 15줄, 17줄, 19줄 바둑이 병존해 오다가 당나라 시대에 19줄 바둑이 대세를 이루게 되었다. 당나라 후기에는 백제와 일본에도 19줄 바둑이 보급되었다. 마침내 19줄 바둑이 17줄 바둑을 제치고 보편화된 데는 19줄 바둑의 우주론적 해석이 중요한 역할을 하였다고 제안한다.
