The purpose of this paper is to examine the multi-perspective of sympathy and to explore its implications for enhancing the welfare community through the welfare education based on sympathy. Our society has experienced the roaring of Neo-Liberalism, the polarization of the class, the deepening of the chasm between the haves and the have-nots, and the prevalence of selfishness. In this respect, we need to restore our society and solidate our community by enhancing the ability of sympathy. Rogers expressed his thought about sympathy in the theory of 'the mode of relationship', which is based on the humanistic approach to psychology. A. Smith described the principle of human selfishness in the Theory of Moral Sentiment and in the Wealth of Nations he referred to the principle of selfishness. Many people tend to say that this is a theoretical contradiction, the so-called "Smith Problem". But that problem is solved through the medium of the principle of justice based on the principle of sympathy. Smith established an ethics for a civil society, an ethics of selfishness based on sympathy, and regarded this as the driving force for the development of society.

현재 신자유주의는 시장에 대한 무한한 믿음을 전제로 하고 있기에, 사회의 모든 문제 역시 시장에 맡겨두는 것이 최선의 대안이라는 태도를 취한다. 신자유주의의 정책 아젠다는 기업활동을 자유화하고 공기업을 민영화하며 국가의 경제적 역할을 축소하는 것 등이 기본이다. 그러므로 복지부문에서도 당연히 축소지향적 정책이 주를 이루고 있으며, 이는 사회적 양극화를 심화시키고, 대규모 감세 정책으로 사회안전망을 와해시키는 결과를 초래하고 있다. 바로 이런 점에서 인간의 얼굴을 한 자본주의 곧 삶의 질을 중시하는 사회건설에 대해 재삼 성찰의 기회를 갖게 되는 것이다. 삶의 질을 중시하는 복지공동체 건설은 구성원들 간 타인의 곤경이나 형편을 마치 자기 자신의 것인 양 느끼는 ‘공감’ 능력에 기틀을 두고, 이 공감 능력을 확산시킴으로써 가능하다. Rogers는 미시적 접근으로 누군가가 자신의 마음을 공감하며 들어줄 때 그 사람은 자신의 내면에서 경험하고 있는 흐름에 좀 더 정확하게 귀 기울여 들을 수 있고, 나아가 자신의 성장을 촉진시킬 수 있다는 ‘관계방식’으로서의 공감을 분석하고 있다. Smith의 공감원리는 이기적인 개인을 전체 사회로 조화시키는 사회통합원리로 작용하여 이기심과 이타심을 모순 없이 조화시키는 역할을 하는 것으로 이해된다. 결국 공감은 개인 심리적인 가치뿐 아니라 사회적 가치를 가지고 있는 중요한 자산으로서 공동체 질서 정립의 원리일 뿐 아니라 보편적 인간애 달성을 위한 가장 바람직한 수단이므로 도덕교육은 물론 복지교육의 중심테마가 되어야 할 것이다
