This study explores the use of citizen-generated content in coverage of natural disasters which result in a type of crisis situations. During coverage of the heavy snow in 2010 and heavy rain in 2011 in Seoul, the authors examine the media's use of both official versus non-official sources and the use of technology sources. Using a content analysis of newspapers and the TV news website, results of this study revealed that reporters were more likely to use non-official sources, and less likely to use citizen-generated contents, or non-official technology sources. The citizen-generated contents were more likely to be used in straight news about the damage. These results implicate that crisis managers need to utilize social media to communicate their messages successfully during a crisis.

본 연구는 미디어의 자연재난 보도에서 정보원 이용정도에 대해 분석하였다. 2010년과 2011년에 서울 지역에서 발생한 폭설과 폭우 보도에서 공식/비공식 정보원 이용정도를 살펴보고, 테크놀로지를 이용한 시민제작 콘텐츠(citizen-generated contents)의 이용정도도 함께 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 자연재난 보도에서 비공식 정보원이 공식 정보원보다 많이 이용되었고, 시민제작 콘텐츠의 비중은 14%로 나타났으며 피해상황을 전하는 스트레이트 기사에서 주로 이용되었다. 재난보도에서 시민제작 콘텐츠의 이용정도는 아직 낮은 수준이지만, 전통적인 미디어에 의존하던 위기관리에서 시민제작 콘텐츠의 가능성을 확인할 수 있다.
