This study examined the participants' engagement and satisfaction for Korean sex offender treatment programs. We conducted an in-depth interview with 20 Korean sex offenders who have participated in prison-based sex offender treatment programs, and analysed data in a qualitative way. We found that many sex offender treatment programs had either low or at best moderate level of motivation to participating in therapy. Regarding the major reasons that were associated with such low level of motivation, interviewees addressed that they had negative feelings about participating in therapy, particularly revealing their offense history and admitting their crimes, which increased their resistance to coming to the therapy. Participants reported that they had been positively affected by the relationship with therapists, but they would need more time for individual therapy. Lastly, participants reported that therapy affected their lives positively, although some did not acknowledge it. All the findings suggest that in order to increase the effectiveness of the sex offender treatment program, we should put more weight on strengthening sex offenders' motivation and engagement for the therapy.

본 연구는 최근 2년 이내에 교정시설에서 성범죄자 치료프로그램에 참여한 성폭력 범죄자 20명을 심층 면담하여 치료프로그램의 참여 동기, 참여에 대한 필요성 인식, 치료과정에 대한 인식 등을 조사하고자 하였다. 성범죄자의 치료프로그램 참여 동기를 보면 전체적으로 참여 동기가 낮은 수준부터 높은 수준까지 고르게 답변하여, 참여 동기에는 개인적인 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 주목할 것은 프로그램 참여 동기가 낮은 이유는 대부분 집단 내에서 성범죄에 대한 범죄 사실을 개방하는 것에 대한 수치심, 창피함 등이었고, 이러한 낮은 동기는 프로그램에 대한 저항으로 이어지고 있음을 응답자와의 심층 면담을 통해 알 수 있었다. 치료과정에 대한 인식에서는 대부분 치료자에 대해 상당한 친밀감을 가지고 있었고 자신의 변화에 대해 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다고 생각하는 경향이 있었다. 프로그램의 효과적 측면으로는 타인에 대한 이해, 분노 등의 감정 조절, 왜곡된 인지 수정 등이 자주 언급되었다. 성범죄자 치료프로그램에 대한 효과성을 높이기 위해서는 각 개인의 프로그램 참여에 대한 동기를 강화시켜 참여도를 증가시키는 것이 우선시되어야 하며, 이를 위해 본격적인 치료에 앞서 동기를 강화시켜주는 별도의 프로그램 도입을 제안하는 바이다.
