Negative affectivity (NA), conceptualized as temperamental sensitivity to negative stimuli, is one of the strongest predictors of anxiety and depression. The aim of this study is to find out whether emotion regulation strategies mediate the effects of NA on depression and anxiety. Specifically this research focused on two emotion regulation strategies that have received considerable research attention: experiential avoidance and cognitive reappraisal. 295 undergraduate students completed self report questionnaires which consisted of ATQ-SF, AAQ-II, ERQ, CES-D, and BAI. The results showed that NA was strongly related to experiential avoidance whereas the correlation between NA and cognitive reappraisal did not reach the statistical significance. Experiential avoidance fully mediated the relationship between NA and depression, and partially mediated the relationship between NA and anxiety. These results strongly support the role of emotional regulation strategies, experiential avoidance in particular, in the increased vulnerability of high NA people to anxiety and depression and suggest that more attention needs to be paid to experiential avoidance in designing intervention programs for those with high negative affectivity.

본 연구는 부정적 정서성이 우울 및 불안에 미치는 영향을 특정 정서 조절 방식이 매개하는지 여부를 밝히고자 진행되었다. 구체적으로, 기존 연구를 통해 대표적 적응적인 정서 조절 전략으로 밝혀진 인지적 재평가와 최근 부적응적인 전략을 포괄하는 개념으로 주목을 받고 있는 경험 회피의 매개 효과를 비교하고자 하였다. 대학생 참가자 295명이 작성한 자기보고 설문지를 바탕으로 상관 분석을 한 결과, 부정적 정서성은 인지적 재평가의 사용 정도와 관련이 없었으며, 경험 회피와는 높은 정적 상관을 보였다. 매개 분석 결과, 부정적 정서성이 불안 및 우울에 미치는 영향을 경험 회피가 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 때, 우울의 경우 완전 매개 모형이 지지된 반면, 불안의 경우 부분 매개 모형이 지지되어 종속 변인에 따른 차이가 발견되었다. 끝으로 본 연구의 의의, 한계점, 앞으로의 연구 방향에 대하여 논의하였다
