Due to the influence of the cultural characteristics of both postmodernism and advanced digital media, a new style of media culture is being attempted on the basis of the popularity of the arts. This approach in the arena of new media culture attempts to create an experimental artwork through utilising a combination of genres and various media. The animated documentary differs from both the animation film and the live-action documentary; however, it adopts the function of those two genres. The animated documentary creates its own unique area through the representation of reality using fictional animated images. The distinctiveness of the narrative construction, and the method of visual representation regarding reality, relate to postmodern characteristics. With regards to this, many research papers about the animated documentary cite postmodernism as a tool of analysis. In the light of this, this paper attempts to identify how postmodern characteristics are embodied in the animated documentary film, and the narrative is pertinently represented through examining the animated documentary film, ‘Waltz with Bashir’ (2008).

디지털 미디어의 진보와 함께 포스트모더니즘의 문화적 특성의 영향으로 인해 예술성과 대중성을 바탕으 로 한 새로운 영상문화가 시도되고 있다. 이는 형식주의와 장르의 뚜렷한 정체성을 추구하는 전통적인 미 학과 다른 개념으로써 장르간 혼합과 다양한 미디어를 이용한 실험적인 작품 제작이 이루어지고 있다. 다 큐멘터리의 혼종양식 중 하나인 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리(Animated documentary)는 허구적 표현요소인 애 니메이션과 실제 사실을 다루는 다큐멘터리 형식을 혼합한 장르이다. 기존의 애니메이션 영화와 일반 다 큐멘터리 장르와는 다르지만, 그 특성에 있어서 두 가지 장르의 기능을 혼합함으로써 ‘허구적 이미지를 통 한 사실에 대한 재현’ 이라는 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리만의 고유한 영역을 창조하고 있다. 이러한 특성에 의해, 사실에 대한 시각영상의 재현 방법과 내러티브 구성에 있어서 포스트 모더니즘적 특성이 내포되어 있으며, 또한 포스트모더니즘은 관련 학자들에 의해 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리 영상작품을 분석하는데 있 어서 많이 인용되는 이론 중 하나이다. 이에, 포스트모더니즘의 특성이 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리에서 어떻 게 구현되고, 적절히 표현되는지에 대한 연구의 필요성을 인식하였다. 이에 본 연구는 장편 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리 영화인 ‘바시르와 왈츠를’ (Waltz with Bashir, 2008)에 대한 작품분석을 통해 애니메이티드 다큐 멘터리와 포스트모더니즘의 특성과 그 연관성에 대해 논의 해보고자 한다.
