초록

영어

This study aims to analyze the Russian translation of Kim Joo-Young's 'The Sound of Thunder' to examine translation problems in translating Korean women's language. As for the concept of women’s language, this study defines it the “language where women are the subject”, which includes address terms, expressions, and conducts related to women. According to Korean linguists, Korean women's language was influenced by Confucian principles and reflects traditions of food, clothing, other life necessities, social norms, history, and unequal representation of women in Korean society, such as man-dominance, preference to sons, the patriarchal system, etc. Therefore, it is hard to find any equivalent expressions or concepts in target language. And translating such kind of culture-specific women's languages, a translator faces the problems caused by cultural gaps. In this regard, the translation of korean women's language is not just changing linguistic codes, but mediating cultural gaps between source language and target language societies. This paper, in this perspectives, analyzes the Russian translations of 'the Sound of Thunder' and examines which translation strategies are taken by the translator to mediate the cultural gaps related with women's language.
