The Study of the Relation Between Mothers’ Psychological Well-being and Children’s Emotional Intelligence

One of the goals of this study was to provide basic data needed to develop programs for improved children’s emotional intelligence and maintaining interpersonal relations through the relation between mothers’ psychological well-being and children’s emotional intelligence. Also, it intended to let parents and teachers who bring up and educate children know the importance of children’s emotional intelligence so that they were encouraged to use it in counselling. This study was conducted on 187 children attending educational institutions for young children in the western Gyeongnam, their mothers and teachers. The tool for measuring in this research was based on ‘Psychological Well-Being Scale: PWBS by Ryff(1989) and the children’s emotional intelligence measure for teachers was based on Emotional Intelligence Scale: EIS by Byeong-rae Lee(1997). And the researcher of this study and an expert analyzed questions of them and used modified questions. The questionnaires of this research were distributed and collected by the researcher visiting educational institutions for young children from the end of April, 2011 to the end of June. The results of the research were as follows. First, mothers’ psychological well-being depending on child and parent variables showed difference from mothers’ psychological well-being depending on age of children. And the score of self-acceptance was high among mothers’ psychological well -being when parents had the higher economic standard, the overall psychological well-being of mothers showed higher scores. Second, in children’s emotional intelligence depending on child, parent and teacher variables, the following results were obtained. There was a significant difference in self- awareness, self-control and other-awareness regarding children’s emotional intelligence depending on their age. When parents had the higher economic standard, children’s emotional intelligence showed differences in the ability to control and recognize others. Third, among sub-categories of mothers’ psychological well-being, environmental mastery came first and then it was followed by purpose in life, self-acceptance, positive relation with others and autonomy in terms of the relation between mothers’ psychological well-being and children’s emotional intelligence.

본 연구는 어머니의 심리적 안녕감과 유아의 정서지능과의 관계를 알아보 고 그러한 관계를 통 해, 유아의 정서지능 향상과 원만한 대인관계 유지를 위한 프로그램 개발 에 필요한 기초 자료를 마련하는데 의미를 두고자 하였다. 본 연구에서 나타난 결과는 첫째, 유아 의 연령 중 만4세의 어 머니와 부모의 경제적 수준이 높을수록 어머니의 심리적 안녕감은 대체적 으로 높게 나타났다. 둘 째, 유아의 연령에 따른 유아의 정서지능에서는 자기인식능력, 자기조절능 력, 타인인식능력에서 유 의미한 차이를 보였다. 부모의 경제적 수준이 높을수록 유아의 정서지능에 서는 타인인식능력과 타 인조절능력에서 차이를 보였다. 셋째, 어머니의 심리적 안녕감과 유아의 정서지능과의 관계에서는 어머니의 심리적 안녕감 하위 영역 중 환경통제력과 삶의 목적, 자아수용, 긍정적 대인관계와 자 율성 순으로 유아의 정서지능과 관계를 나타냈다.
