Righteous object of history education is not to teach a chronology of events and theirs alleged ideology to school boys and girls who are constructing a view of world. Education of war history must be described in a broader level including a “Peace Education”.
More objective description of two wars will help school boys and girls understand a history without color. And this will help make a peaceful future induced by righteous way of history education.
War is a dark revelation of politics, economy, society and culture. But war in current textbooks of Korea and America is described in simple schemata, which center on history of politics and its hero. History of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, which have a very important place in each history, is described as linear and chronological narratives full of a self-rationalizing of an ideology, not from a view of how disastrous it is and what is to be done to realize its seriousness.
The fundamental aim to describe war in history textbooks is to understand current historical development and to keep the cultural inheritance which has to be kept by human beings. Furthermore, the ultimate aim is a peace education resulted in effort to prevent more wars by learning a lesson about its brutality from wars and developing student’s historical consciousness and historical ability to think.

세계 유일의 분단국에 살아가고 있는 우리 아이들에게 ‘전쟁’에 대한 교육은 단지 과거에 일어났던 일의 회고가 아니라 현재에 당면하고 있는 매우 중요한 주제이다.
어떠한 형태의 전쟁이든 간에 전쟁 속에는 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ사회ㆍ문화적인 모든 면이 담겨 있다. 그러나 한국과 미국의 현행 중ㆍ고등학교 교과서에서 나타나는 전쟁의 서술들은 너무나 도식적이고 정치사와 영웅 중심으로 제시되어 있다. 한국과 미국의 역사에서 가장 중요한 위치를 차지하는 6ㆍ25 전쟁과 베트남 전쟁마저도 인과적 서술과 자국 이데올로기의 합리화만을 서술하였을 뿐 이 전쟁으로 인해 인간의 근본적인 삶이 얼마나 파괴되었는지, 그 결과 나타는 심각성은 무엇인지에 대한 고찰이나 역사적 고민들이 서술되지 못하고 있다.
역사교과서에서 전쟁을 서술하는 기본적인 목적은 과거의 전쟁들을 통해 현재의 역사 발전 과정을 이해하고 인류가 지켜야할 기본 유산을 지키기 위함이다. 더 나아가 전쟁이 가지는 잔혹성을 교훈으로 삼고 학생들의 역사의식과 역사적 사고력을 함양하여 더 이상의 전쟁이 일어나지 않게 노력하는 평화 교육을 궁극적인 목적으로 한다.
세상을 바라보는 눈과 가치관을 형성해 가는 중ㆍ고등학교 학생들에게 전쟁을 시대 순으로 단순히 나열하고 자국의 이데올로기를 암묵적으로 학습 하는데 도움을 주는 것은 더 이상 역사교육의 올바른 목표가 아님을 기억하여야 한다. 역사 교과서의 전쟁사 교육은 더 이상 사건의 객관적 관점 나열에 그쳐서는 안 되고 그 보다 더 큰 의미의 ‘평화 교육’을 포괄하여 서술되어야 한다.
현행 역사 교과서가 가지는 문제점들을 정확하게 파악하여 전쟁 자체가 가진 문제를 보다 객관적이고 꾸밈없이 교과서에 서술하는 것만이 미래를 이끌어나갈 학생들에게 바른 역사 교육의 밑거름이 될 것이며 평화로운 미래를 만들어가는 올바른 역사 교육의 방향이 될 것이다.
