This 6-month qualitative study explores the complex interrelations among cultural, social, and economic variables that affect how 3 ethnic minority students in Korea engage in EFL literacy acquisition and activities. Sociocultural data were collected from researcher field notes, classroom observations, interviews with focus 3 students and their parents, and surveys. Analysis of these data suggests that culturally responsive instructional texts (such as multicultural picture books) and practices be employed to address their English literacy learning needs effectively. This study also suggests that the ethnic students' linguistical and cultural diversity could be an excellent asset to classrooms when they are assisted with culturally responsive instruction. Significant implications are also drawn for a rethinking of various multiculturalism(s) in Korea. The findings of this study are odds with multicultural practices and policies in Korea, indicating that there is an urgent need to enact a distinctively Korean multiculturalism in a transnational context. 이 질적 연구는 6개월 간에 걸쳐 문화적, 사회적, 경제적 환경이라는 변수가 어떻게 다문화가정 학생들의 영어 문식성과 수업 활동에 영향을 미치는가를 연구하고 있다. 사회문화적 자료는 연구자의 현장 경험, 수업 관찰, 다문화가정 학생과 그 부모와의 면담, 그리고 설문 조사를 통해 수집되었다. 자료 분석 결과 다문화가정학생들의 영어 문식성과 관련한 필요에 보다 효과적으로 부응하기 위해서는 영미 다문화 그림책과 같은 문화적으로 반응을 일으킬 수 있는 수업 자료와 수업 방법이 사용되어야만 한다는 것을 발견하였다. 또한 다문화가정 학생들이 지니고 있는 언어적, 문화적 다양성은 문화적으로 적합한 교육의 도움을 받는다면 교실에서 배움을 더욱 풍부하게 할 수 있는 훌륭한 자산이 될 수 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 이러한 발견은 현재 국내에서 수용되고 있는 다문화주의와 다문화주의 정책을 다시 생각해 보아야 할 정도의 매우 중요한 시사점을 주고 있다. 이 연구의 결과는 많은 점에서 한국에서의 다문화주의 활동과 정책과 일치하지 않음을 보여주고 있는데, 이는 탈국가라는 현실 속에서 한국적인 다문화주의의 정착이 시급하다는 것을 지적하고 있다.
