The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to investigate the experiences of six fifth graders (3 boys and 3 girls) from one metropolitan city near Seoul and (b) to explore the case of elementary school children's experiential avoidance during various physical activity field for P.E.. The students who participated in physical education classes from 2010 through 2011. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis were used for data collection. Personal case records and profiles were used for data analysis suggested by Spradley(1980). To increase the trustworthiness of data analysis, triangulation, member checks, and peer debriefing were used. The results of this analysis were as follows. First, the case of experiential avoidance was ‘boring stretching' for boys and ‘hard and painful' for girls. Second, the case of experiential avoidance was ‘lack of body ability' for boys and ‘fear and injury' for girls. Third, the case of experiential avoidance was ‘power conflict' for boys and ‘outcome conflict' for girls. Fourth, the case of experiential avoidance was ‘bad sense of beat and rhythm' for boys and ‘unfamiliar shyness' for girls.

이 연구는 초등학교 아동들이 신체활동 영역별 체육수업에서 경험하는 회피 사례를 통해 그 원인과 의미를 찾고 홀리스틱 교육의 관점에서 이해하는 데 그 목적이 있다. I시에 소재한 J초등학교 5학년 재학생 6명(남3, 여3)을 연구대상자로 선정하여, 각 영역에 맞게 수업을 진행하면서 관찰, 면담, 문서 등의 자료를 통하여 연구에 필요한 자료를 수집하고 귀납적 범주분석법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 또한 자료의 진실성 확보를 위해 자료수집과 분석의 전 과정에서 다각도 분석법, 구성원 간 검토, 동료 간 협의 등을 실시하였으며, 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 건강 활동에서 남학생들은 ‘스트레칭은 지루해’, 여학생들은 ‘힘들고 아프기만 해’를 걱정 혹은 회피경험으로 들었다. 둘째, 도전 활동에서 남학생들은 ‘몸치’, 여학생들은 ‘두려움과 부상’을 걱정 혹은 회피경험으로 들었다. 셋째, 경쟁 활동에서 남학생들은 ‘권력 갈등’, 여학생들은 ‘승패 갈등’을 걱정 혹은 회피경험으로 들었다. 넷째, 표현 활동에서 남학생들은 ‘박치와 리듬치’, 여학생들은 ‘낯선 창피함’을 걱정 혹은 회피경험으로 들었다.
