A traditional stage setting used in the performing arts limits temporal and spatial expressions. To solve this problem, visual media is being incorporated in the stage settings. Visual media in the performing arts has been developing in diverse ways. This paper aims to analyze the functions and portention of visual media design for stage settings in the performing arts. Domestic dance performances that use visual media for their stage settings were studied. Since around 2000, visual media started to function as stage settings in performances. Actors use visual media as the stage backgrounds and use it as a tool to visually explain the symbolism of the performance. Virtual actors can replace real ones when the physical limits of the latter limit the performance. A traditional stage setting cannot display motion as visual media can. Visual media can stimulate the audience's emotion and can facilitate the incorporation of important elements in performances.

공연예술에서 사용되어졌던 기존의 무대장치는 시간적, 공간적 표현의 한계를 가지고 있다. 이를 해결하기 위하여 공연예술에서도 영상매체를 무대장치의 도구로써 적극적으로 활용하고 있다. 공연예술에서 영상매 체의 활용은 매우 다양한 형태로 발전되고 있다. 본 논문은 무대영상 디자인의 기능적 유형 분석을 통하 여 공연예술에서 활용되어지고 있는 무대영상 디자인의 기능적 잠재성을 살펴보고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 무대영상을 활용한 국내 무용 공연을 중심으로 사례들을 분석하고자한다. 2000년대부터 무용 공연에서도 무대영상을 활용하기 시작하였다. 무대 배경을 영상 매체로 대체하기도 하고 무용의 상징적 의미를 시각 적으로 설명하는 도구로 활용하기도 한다. 더 나아가서 실제 배우가 보여줄 수 없는 연기를 가상의 배우 를 활용하여 표현하기도 한다. 움직임에 대한 기능이 없었던 기존의 무대장치와는 달리 움직임을 표현할 수 있는 영상매체를 무대장치로 활용함으로써 무용공연에서 훨씬 다양한 방식으로 관객들의 감성을 자극 할 수 있게 되었다. 이를 통하여 무대영상은 점점 무용의 표현력을 다양하게 발전시키는 중요한 요인이 되고 있다.
