This study addresses the 'Animated Documentary', rising as a new genre. This form of documentary has become popularised in Europe, and particularly, ‘Ryan'(2004) and ‘The Moon and the Sun: An imagined Conversation’ (2006) got awarded in the Oscar short film nominees, and '‘Waltz with Bashir' (2008), written and directed by Ari Folman, was premiered at the 2008 Cannes film festival. This genre has become popular with audiences due to its new cinematic value. In addition to this, academia are actively discussing and arguing regarding this issue in Europe. In order to understand the theoretical background and characteristics in a pertinent way, literature and contextual review were done using the four categories (Imitative, Subjective, Fantastic and Post-modern mode) of Wells. In this respect, three films related to the animated documentary format were studied. Revealing the characteristics of the animated documentary is meaningful for the further study of related fields and offering a basic principle through this study.

본 연구에서는 새로운 영상장르로 주목 받고 있는 Animated documentary (애니메이티드 다큐멘터리)의 특 성에 대해 고찰하였다. 그 동안 유럽에서 많은 단편 작품이 제작되었으며, 최근 제작된 ‘Ryan’ (2004)과 ‘The Moon and the Sun: An imagined Conversation’ (2006)은 오스카 영화제에서 최우수 단편 영화상 수상 하였으며, Ari Folman의 ‘Waltz with Bashir' (2008)는 깐느 영화제 공식경쟁부분에 선정되는 등 많은 영화제 에서 작품성을 인정받으며 대중들에게 가까이 다가서고 있다. 또한 유럽의 영상 및 애니메이션 관련 학회 에서도 활발한 연구와 토론이 이루어지고 있다. 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리에 대한 이론적 배경과 특성을 알아보기 위해 문헌조사와 영국의 Wells 교수가 분류한 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리에 대한 네 가지 유형에 대해 알아보았으며, 이를 바탕으로 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리 장르로 제작된 3개 작품을 사례조사 하였다. 이를 통해 최근 유럽과 미국에서 새로운 장르로 인식 받는 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리에 대한 특성을 도출 하고, 이해를 돕는데 의의가 있다 하겠다.
