Oxidative stress is a condition of imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and sharp reduction on the activity of the biological system to detoxify the reactive intermediates. The disturbances in the normal reduction-oxidation reaction state of cells and tissues can cause toxic effects through the accumulation of the free radicals that is prove to be associated and involved on the onset and progression of many diseases such
as diabetes mellitus, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, ischemic-reperfusion injury, and end-stage renal disease.
Alkaline reduced water (ARW) generated either by electrolysis and chemical reaction with alkaline earth metal is high in pH, high dissolved hydrogen, low dissolved oxygen and negative oxidation reduction potential. ARW can scavenge ROS and can protect DNA from oxidative damage. The scavenging ability of ARW is accounted to its colloidal or active hydrogen with high reducing ability believed to be more enhanced by platinum nanoparticle.
Evidence to date is that ARW has an antioxidative effect that could help prevent and delay the progression of free radical related damages. It was suggest that the underlying mechanism of ARW as scavenger of ROS is may be due to the direct adsorption of ROS by active hydrogen. However the exact molecular mechanism of ARW as scavenger of ROS is worthwhile to explore further. Here we discuss recent findings and hypotheses on the ROS scavenging ability of ARW in oxidative stress related diseases.
