This article is based upon a survey conducted about Korean elementary and secondary school teachers' demands for revising the current teacher training curriculum. The sample was 1,800 in-service teachers, comprised of every five teachers from the total of 360 schools randomly selected with consideration given to the levels of schools and the sizes of region. 1,424 survey questionnaires were returned from 1,800 distributed copies. The results demonstrated their demands for expansion and reduction in the three main areas of the Korean teacher education curriculum - subject-matter, teacher education and liberal arts areas. There was a demand for increasing courses in the subject-matter area. In particular, pedagogical courses dealing with instructional issues such as effective instructional strategies, understanding learners, raising motivation levels, and reformulating curriculum are more demanded than subject content courses. For the teacher education area of courses, practicum is requested to be expanded with more curricular emphasis on understanding students in guidance and counseling, development of professional qualities and effective management of classrooms. Preference was given to keeping the status quo for the ratio of liberal arts courses, of which content should be revised to have more emphasis on interpersonal and communication skills, interdisciplinary studies and creativity.

본 연구는 교원양성 교육과정을 이수하고 초․중등학교 현장에서 교직을 수행하고 있는 학교 현장 교원들을 대상으로 교직 경험 결과, 교원양성 교육과정 영역의 적정 비중은 어떠해야 하는지, 교직을 잘 수행하기 위해서는 교원양성 교육에서 어떠한 내용이 강조되어야 할지 등 학교 현장과의 연계성에 초점을 둔 경험적 자료를 분석하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 학교급, 지역규모를 고려하여 총 360개 학교를 표집, 각 학교당 5명의 교사를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사도구는 문헌분석과 면담조사를 통해 초안을 개발하여 전문가 검토를 받아 수정․보완하였으며, 면담조사 결과는 설문지 개발과 설문조사 결과 해석을 위한 근거자료로 활용되었다. 구체적인 설문조사 내용은 전공, 교직, 교양 등 교원양성 교육과정 구성 비율의 확대 및 축소, 가장 강조되어야 할 내용, 교과내용학과 교과교육학과목 간의 비율 확대 및 축소, 교직과목 재구성 안에 대한 의견 등이다.
