The conflict of Objectivism and Relativism is the time-honored problem. The Ethical norms seeks after establishment of universal criterion. However strengthening universality causes the oppression of authoritarianism. This oppression is not to accept the ethical norms but to increase repulsion, and weakens the power of norms, The modern ethics pursued the establishment of universal ethical criterion. But the elements of relativeness increased more and more through the changes of social structure. Virtue ethics helps to dissolve the problem of universality and relativity is ethics. Because it harmonizes an individual relativity and universality of human being's life. Especially this harmony is revealed well in phronesis. The defect of virtue ethics is relativity of virtue that belong to the each community. However, though the virtues of each community look like incommensurable, it is the incommensurability of problems and criterions. The ultimate principle that is to realize the happiness life is universal, and its courses is mixed the elements of universality and relativity. This courses are the typical circulation of hermeneutic and the realization of phronesis. This article suggest that virtue ethics dissolves the problem of universality and relativity, and insist that phronesis can do the role of dissolution.

인식론이나 윤리학에 있어서 객관성과 상대성의 갈등을 해결해보려는 노력은 끊임없이 지속되고 있는 문제 중의 하나이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 객관성과 상대성의 문제가 덕 윤리에 적용될 때 그것이 해결되기 보다는 해소된다는, 즉 끊임없이 뒤섞여지면서 지속될 수 있다는 것을 보이고자 하였다. 근대 윤리학은 보편성의 이상 아래 이성적이고 합리적인 인간과 삶을 구성하고자 하였다. 그러나 개인적인 측면에서 볼 때 삶의 수많은 측면들은 모두 상대적인 것이며, 이러한 상대성을 보편의 기준으로 규격화시키려 할 때 일어나는 갈등들은 쉽게 무마시킬 수 없는 것들이다. 보편적인 윤리의 잣대로 개인적인 개별성이 침해당할 때 윤리적 규범은 심정적으로 힘을 잃게 되고 권위주의적 횡포로 전락하게 된다. 덕 윤리는 상황의 상대성, 개인의 특수성을 인정하고서 주어진 상황에서 가장 적절한 판단과 행위를 산출하려 한다. 그리고 이러한 개별적인 상황들이 전체적인 인간 삶을 행복이라는 최고선에 이를 수 있도록 방향 지운다. 이러한 덕 윤리의 특징은 상대성과 보편성을 대립시키지도 않으며, 그것이 간단하게 해결되는 것으로 여기지도 않는다. 각각의 상황들이나 개인이 지닌 삶의 맥락의 구체적인 문제들은 ‘불가공약적’이지만 그러한 상황들과 맥락들은 서로서로 비교 가능하며, 그러한 비교와 성찰의 과정 속에서 우리는 우리 자신과 타인들을 더 잘 이해하게 된다. 비교와 성찰 속에서 이루어지는 이해와 해석은 전형적인 해석학적 작업이며, 이를 통한 적용의 구체적 범례가 프로네시스(phronesis), 즉 실천적 지혜의 발현이다. 본 논문은 해석학적 순환의 과정 속에서 상대성과 보편성이 어우러지며, 이러한 어우러짐의 대표적인 범례가 덕 윤리, 그 중에서도 프로네시스의 발현임을 보이고자 하였다.
