Although the importance of the convention industry is fully recognized, the research of convention is mainly focused on the convention service and the rest of the areas are confronted by the lack of research. Therefore, it is important for the Jeju to research for the strength and weakness of the convention industry that the Jeju has with the broad understanding of convention for maintain the competitive advantage in the MICE industry. Based on the given facts, this study will stand to begin the research with the following objectives. The survey for the substantial proof of the research has been undertaken between October 18th, 2010 to November 8th through the direct email and fax survey to the 75 companies where the permissions have been granted by the PEO or PCO directors. Among the 75 companies, final sample of 50 companies besides the 25 companies with untrustworthy answers have been used for the substantial analysis. This study examines the definition contemplation of the convention industry, and conducted the competitiveness evaluation of the convention industry in Jeju, Seoul and Busan based on the primary research. Seoul has the highest competitiveness in terms of every areas but Jeju has the lowest competitiveness among three destination.

본 연구는 컨벤션 산업에 대해 전반적인 이해와 함께 컨벤션 개최지로서의 제주, 부산, 서울의 경쟁력을 평가하고자 하였다. 컨벤션산업의 중요성이 인식됨에도 불구하고, 컨벤션 관련 연구에서는 컨벤션 서비스에 대해 집중되면서 컨벤션과 관련된 다른 분야에 대한 연구는 부족하였다. MICE 산업에서 제주가 경쟁적 우위를 얻기 위해서는 컨벤션 산업에서의 제주의 강점과 약점을 파악하는 전반적인 이해가 필요하다. 연구의 실증조사를 위하여 2010년 10월 18일부터 11월 8일까지 75개의 국제회의기획업체(PCO)와 전시기획업체(PEO)를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 결과 응답이 없거나 응답 내용이 불성실한 25개 업체를 제외한 50개 업체의 응답 내용을 최종 표본으로 하여 실증분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 모든 평가 부문에서 서울이 가장 높은 경쟁력을 나타냈고, 제주는 3개 지역 중 가장 낮은 경쟁력을 나타냈다. 특히 제주는 다른 지역에 비해 전시시설이 부족한 것으로 나타나 컨벤션센터의 실용적인 활용 가치를 높이는 방안이 필요함을 확인할 수 있었다.
