‘Saemaeul’ movement is a idea of lifelong education to renew local community and everyday life community. This idea was influenced by Young-Mo Yoo’s "Seeal(seed) Thought" which was affected by Christian spirituality. Initiation of Saemaeul movement started from Man-Sik Cho’s operation of agricultural course after he was appointed as professor of Soongsil University which was built on Christian spirituality. After Independence, Young-Mo Yoo’s disciple Hyun-Pil Lee practiced autonomy, independence and self-strength movement while farming after Dongkwangwon has established on 1950’s. This movement has sublimated in Saemaeul adult education movement later. Saemaeul movement of 1960’s was actualized when Dal-Young Yoo, another best disciple, acceded to the 2nd director of Reconstruction People Movement Center and build adult education academy. On the early 1970’s, Tae-Young Yoo has leaded Saemaeul Adult Continuing Education Movement of diligent, self-dependence and cooperation at the Blue House. Saemaeul idea was for the powerless and poor peasants who were sweating at the bottom of the social scale. This idea continued to Kim Sy Seup, Seo Kyong Deok, Lee Yul Gok and Lee Ji Ham and later, to Yunahm Park Ji Won, Dasan Jung Yak Young and to Ahn Chang Ho and Young-Mo Yoo in modern history. The most important virtues in Saemaeul movement are love, modesty and the idea of lifelong education based on the spirit of diligence, self-dependence, independence and cooperation.

'새마을' 운동이란 지역사회와 생활공동체를 새롭게 하기 위한 평생교육 사상이다. 이 사상은 전통사상과 기독교사상에서 영향을 받은 유영모의 씨사상에서 영향을 받았다. 새마을 운동의 처음 시작은 유영모와 교류하던 조만식이 기독교사상에 바탕을 둔 숭실대학교수로 부임 후 농과강습소(農科講習所)를 운영함으로써 길을 열었다. 광복 후 1950년대는 유영모의 제자 이현필이 동광원을 세운 후 농사를 지으면서 자주, 자립, 자강운동을 펼쳤다. 이 운동이 훗날 새마을 성인교육사상으로 승화되었다. 1960년대의 새마을 운동은 유영모의 또 다른 수제자인 유달영(柳達永)이 재건 국민운동본부 제2대 본부장으로 취임하고 전국에 성인교육원을 세운 후 활성화 되었다. 1970년대 초에는 유태영이 청와대에서 근면, 자조, 협동 정신의 새마을 평생교육 운동을 주도했다. 새마을 사상은 가장 낮은(微賤) 자리에 서서 땀 흘리며, 일하는 힘없고 가난한 농민들과 함께 하는 사상이다. 이 사상은 김시습, 서경덕, 이율곡, 이지함으로 이어졌고, 다시 연암 박지원, 다산 정약용의 사상으로 이어진 후 현대사에서 안창호와 유영모에게 이어졌다. 새마을 운동에서 가장 중요한 덕목은 사랑과 겸손과 <근면. 자조. 자립, 협동>정신을 바탕에 둔 평생교육 사상이다.
