Media art of Korea grew dynamically in 1990's. First of all, the growth of the media art makes a motive not only the art field but also the public to interest and to understand contemporary art in Korea. As the background of the change, the support of Korean government for the media art as the combination of science and art had a great influence on the trend with the stream of times such as a globalization and information-oriented society. Since early of 90's, there have been many large scale of exhibitions which are organized by government agencies, public art museum, and local governments in the media art field. The media art was simply considered as an experimental art in the early of 80's, but could reach a popular position as a genre of art yearbook in 1999. Also, the pioneers in the media art field enabled the young artists to face friendly the art in their daily life since their early age and the various points of experimental view in the art has been introduced by the young artist. Even though some problems in the art, the critical-minded artist has expanded much effort for the change of the art and draw a rapid and big growth in the media art field.

90년대는 한국미디어아트가 역동적으로 성장한 시기이다. 무엇보다도 미디어아트의 성장은 미술계뿐 아니라 일반 대중들에게도 많은 관심을 이끌며 현대미술에 대한 이해를 높이는 계기를 만들었다. 이러한 변화가 가능할 수 있었던 배경에는 우선, 외부적으로 세계화, 정보화라는 시대적 흐름 속에서 정부가 ‘과학과 예술의 결합’이라는 이름으로 미디어아트를 후원한 영향이 컸다. 90년대 초반부터 정부산하기관 및 공공미술관, 지자체가 기획하는 대형 미디어아트 전시가 속속 이어졌다. 80년대 초반까지도 실험미술이라는 이름으로 뭉뚱그려지던 한국의 미디어아트는 99년부터 문예연감에 당당히 미술의 한 장르로 자리매김하게 되었다. 내부적으로도 초기 개척세대들을 비롯하여 어린 시절부터 일상 속에서 미디어를 접하며 자라온 젊은 세대도 작가로 등장하면서 90년대 한국의 미디어아트는 다양한 각도에서 실험적 모색이 이어질 수 있었다. 문제점 또한 적지 않았으나 작가들 스스로가 문제의식을 가지고 미디어아트의 변화를 이끌고자 많은 노력을 기울였기에 커다란 성장을 이끌어 낼 수 있었다.
