The purpose of this study is to analyze the elements of holistic education in The Martyred. The Martyred has been categorized as existentialist novel that reveal war, facts and truth, moral, God’s presence, and man’s inner world. The Martyred raised fundamental questions -- how do we live? -- in the world of pain through religion. Why pastor Shin do not expose the facts that the 12 pastors died denying God and that criticize the other pastors. Instead of exposure of 12 pastors’s betrayal, he holds his tongue. What does pastor Shin’s silence mean? Who does he hold his tongue for? With the results of his silence, he was misunderstood and attacked by his followers. The holistic approach has been recognized an alternative educational view for the 21st century. In a broad sense, the terms of ‘holistic’ sometimes can be used as synonyms with ecological, integrated, contextual, spiritual, environmental, systematic, organic, and evolutionary. Therefore, the conception of holistic includes the one of all words above. The Martyred is full of suggestions of holistic education, which are ecological view, spiritual view, caring, sacrifice and whole-being education.

『순교자』는 한국전쟁이라는 전쟁을 배경으로 신의 존재, 전쟁, 사실과 진실, 윤리, 인간사의 부조리 등 인간의 현존재성의 부조리를 직시하고, 이성적 존재임에도 부조리한 인간의 내면과 삶의 현실을 그대로 드러내는 실존주의 소설로 분류되어 왔다.『순교자』는 등장인물을 통해 인류 역사의 삶과 갈등이요, 인간 이상주의를 구체화한 종교라는 것을 모든 이성, 사유, 이데올로기가 함몰되고, 인간 실존성의 극적인 사례인 전쟁을 통해 어떻게 살 것인가에 대한 근본적인 물음을 제기한다. 실존주의란 인간의 삶의 부조리를 인식하고, 끌어안고 인정하며 살아가는 현실에 대한 인식의 측면이 강하지만,『순교자』는 사람이 어떤 가치를 가지고 살아가야 하는지를 이야기하고 있다. 저자는 인간의 부조리를 간과하지 않는다.『순교자』의 전개 처음부터 끝까지 전쟁, 고문, 세계 내 존재로서의 인간을 지속적으로 드러내지만 이상성을 드러내면서 실존주의를 넘어서고 있다.『순교자』가 주는 메시지는 홀리스틱 교육이 지향하는 바와 많은 점에서 일치한다. 개인만이 아닌 공동체와의 관계, 관계성, 도덕적·윤리적 측면의 책임의식, 인간을 인간답게 하는 깊은 영성적 차원의 체험 등 교육의 본질, 삶의 본질과 지향이라는 측면에서의 메시지가 그 궤를 같이한다. Camus와 Dostoyevsky의 계보를 잇는 김은국의『순교자』가 주는 인간 심리학적·도덕적 기술의 전통은 홀리스틱 교육의 이해를 깊게 한다.
