Moving into the age of digital technology and globalization, “ creativity" and “ integration" become key words in the field of education. This paper highlights the role of visual art education demanded by the 21 st Century digital age. To this end, it first reviews the context and scholarly discussions that brought social attention to the need for interdisciplinary approaches in education. Then, it overviews the historical relationship between art and science by reviewing the developmental aspects of activities in the world of arts made possible by the technology development which occurred during the last century. Lastly, it presents a few outcomes of science-majoring students who took a recently developed visual art course, Arts and Creativity, offered at a newly opened institute of science and technology in South Korea. The students' responses to media art are discussed to provide implications for promoting creative imagination in the digital age.

세계화가 가속화되고 있는 디지털 시대에 들어서면서 분야 간 “융합”과 “통섭”이 강조되고 있는 가운데 예술과 과학을 연계시키고자 하는 시도들이 늘고 있어 앞으로 이러한 움직임이 현장교육에 어떤 영향을 미칠지 그 귀추가 주목된다. 이 글에서는 21 세기 디지털 시대가 요구하고 있는 창의적 인재양성을 지향하는 시각예술교육에 대해 논의하기 위해서 최근 개발·시행하고 있는 시각예술 교육과정의 교육 결과와 그 의미를 파악해보고자 한다. 이를 위해， 먼저 예술과 과학의 융합에 대한 필요성을 제기하면서 융합 교육에 대한 사회적 요구를 주장하는 최근의 담론들을 검토하였다. 다음으로 지난 한 세기에 걸친 과학 기술의 발전과 예술과의 관계에 대해 배경적으로 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 최근 개발·운영해 오고 있는 시각예술 교육과정을 통해 수집된 미디어 아트에 대한 이공계열 학생들의 반응 사례들을 분석하면서 이것이 디지털 시대의 창의적 인재 양성에 주는 시사점을 파악하였다.
