A Study on the Correlation between Teaching Methods and Translation Competence

The purpose of this research is to study what competence is required in translation and identify appropriate teaching methods to gain the competence. To this end, the study analyzed source texts and teaching methods employed at translation classes at GSIT. First, to provide theoretical background, the paper reviewed the definition of translation competence and the history of teaching methods based on previous studies on various teachingmethods and translation competence.
Then, instructors' text selection process and teaching methods were observed by analyzing the source texts they used. Next, five instructors were interviewed to identify what teaching methods they use to improve students' translation competence. The results showed that each instructor emphasizes different translation competence and adopts different teaching methods. Teaching methods differed depending on students' grades, translation directions and the characteristics of translation subjects. Korean-to-Chinese translation classes emphasized the ability to express in the target language, while Chinese-to-Korean translation classes focused on the adoptability in a certain field. A translation class of science texts emphasized the ability to learn subject matters and instrumental competence.
