A research methodology for studying Korean old letters(Eongan) and old documents was discussed in this paper from linguistic life history's point of view. In chapter 2, the two terminologies, 'linguistic life history' and 'life history of Korean language' were compared and analyzed. For general cases, the 'linguistic life history' was used, however, in local-specific cases, the term 'life history of Korean language' was used. The latter, 'life history of Korean language' is suitable for the aspect of Korean language education. The subject of linguistic life history research should be linguistic elements those are closely related to everyday life. Then the research methodology of linguistic life history and the investigation of practical aspects the methodology's application was discussed. In chapter 3, the characteristics of Korean old documents were distinguished from Korean old letters(Eongan). A research process and a methodology on Korean old documents were developed. Achievements of several selected previous studies on Korean old documents were summarized and examined. Now there are a few number of studies on Korean old documents. In respond to this situation, this paper tried to review these previous research and provide direction for future research on Korean old documents. Collecting research materials and establishing research methods on Korean language history and linguistic life history are seriously needed for studying Eongan and Korean old documents. We can expect the foundation of linguistic life history including the Korean language history can be established through these attempts.

필자는 이 논문에서 한글 편지(언간)와 한글고문서를 어문생활사적 관점에서 어떻게 연구할 수 있는지 그 방법론에 대해 논하였다. 2장에서 ‘어문생활사’와 ‘국어생활사’라는 두 용어를 비교 분석하여 각 용어가 갖는 특성을 논하였다. ‘어문생활사’를 일반적 용어로 쓰고, 지역을 명시한 ‘한국어문생활사’라는 용어를 설정하였다. 그리고 후자를 줄여 국어교육의 차원에서 ‘국어생활사’라는 용어가 적절하다고 보았다. 그리고 어문생활사의 연구 대상은 어문생활의 여러 요소 중 생활과 밀착된 요소가 되어야 한다고 보았다. 이어서 어문생활사의 연구 방법에 대해 논하고, 연구 대상과 연구 방법을 결합하여 실제적 연구에 적용할 때 어떤 양상으로 실천될 수 있는지를 검토하였다. 3장에서는 언간과 구별되는 한글 고문서의 특성을 지적하였다. 그리고 한글 고문서에 대한 연구 절차 및 방법론을 논하였다. 한글 고문서에 대한 선행 연구 업적을 요약하고 몇몇 연구 사례에 대해 논하였다. 한글 고문서에 관한 연구는 매우 드문 편이다. 이런 상황에서 필자는 선행 연구 사례를 검토하여 앞으로의 한글 고문서의 연구 방향을 모색해 보려 하였다. 언간과 한글 고문서에 대한 국어사적 연구와 어문생활사적 연구가 앞으로 더 활발하게 이루어질 수 있는 자료 정리와 방법론 수립이 절실히 요구된다. 이런 노력은 기존의 국어사 성과를 재창조함은 물론 한민족의 어문생활사 연구를 개척할 수 있다.
