The purpose of this study was focused on the relationship between authoritarian personality and police officers’ job performance. This study conceptualizes three components of job performance: “task performance”, “adaptive performance” and “contexual performance.” To test the hypotheses, survey data from police officers in Daegu are collected and analyzed. Multiple regression analysis identifies several factors which have significant effects on job performance. The results show that conventionalism, anthoritarian submission, authoritarian aggression, projectivity, power and toughness have significant effects on task performance, adaptive performance and contexual performance. These findings suggest that authoritarian personality would increase police officers’ job performance.

이 연구는 경찰공무원의 권위주의적 성격이 직무수행에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 실증적 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 경찰은 직무수행에 있어 위험이나 돌발 상황에 대처하여야 하는 경우가 많다. 그동안 권위주의 성격은 조직에서 개선되어야 할 성격유형이라는 결과가 있었으나 이 연구에서는 권위주의적 성격 변인 중 인습주의, 권위주의적 복종, 권위주의적 공격성, 투사성, 권력과 강인함에 대한 믿음이 과업수행, 맥락수행, 적응수행에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나타났다. 이는 경찰직무의 특수성과도 관련이 있음을 엿볼 수 있겠다. 경찰은 공권력의 최후의 보루로서 타 부처의 공무원에 비해 권위를 요하며 계급제적 요소에 따라 일사분란하게 움직여 직무를 수행하는 경우가 많다. 하지만 권위주의적 성격은 편견형성과 관련하여서는 부정적인 영향을 미치는 결과가 있으므로 조직차원에서 구성원들의 성격유형을 적극 개발하여 그에 맞게 직무를 배치할 필요가 있을 것이다.
