Although the development of science and technology has provided various advantages for human life, it has brought a rapid change to criminal environment, where crimes are getting more intelligent, scientific and muti-national, even creating new types of crime. This study highlights the limit of existing criminology concerning the drastic of criminal environment in this state-of-the-art technology era. In this paper, it will be demonstrated that the existing criminology must go through an innovative change involving its duty, central theories and be transformed into a field of study focussing directly on crime control and crime prevention in order to cope with crimes and criminal surroundings as the biggest threat to modern society. This study suggests the way that we can change criminology into an effective science capable of achieving its basic goals of crime control and crime prevention, and also provides an opportunity for criminologists to contribute to the safety of citizens and higher quality of life.

과학기술의 발달은 인류의 생활전반에 걸쳐 유익함을 제공하여 주었지만, 범죄환경도 급격히 변화시켜 범죄의 지능화․과학화․국제화와 함께 신종범죄까지도 탄생시키고 있다. 따라서 이 연구는 고도의 첨단기술 시대의 도래로 인한 급격한 범죄환경 변화에 있어 기존 범죄학의 한계를 다방면에서 조명할 것이다. 그럼으로써 현대사회의 최대의 위협인 범죄와 그 환경에 효율적으로 대응하기 위해서는 기존의 범죄학이 그 임무와 중점이론, 그리고 방법론에 있어 일대 혁신적인 변화를 이루어내야 하며, 범죄의 통제와 방지에 더욱 직접적인 학문으로 탈바꿈되어야 함을 논증할 것이다. 이로써 범죄학이 범죄통제와 예방이라는 그 학문의 근본적 목적을 달성할 수 있는 효율적인 학문으로 변화할 수 있는 길을 제시하고, 또한 범죄학자들에게도 시민의 안전과 삶의 질 향상에 기여할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것이다.
