The meaning of the Story of O-yu-ran-jeon can be revealed perfectly only if one understands the meaning of laughs occurring in the novel multi-laterally. This thesis is intended to understand the male ethics in the context of the story of one’s growth which is made epic. The story of one’s growth adopts a form of tales which exist universally but contains a historic nature that has a close relationship with a change in reality. The meaning of the laugh can be understood only if the meaning of the growth of Kim, Saeng and Lee, Saeng, the heroes of this novel, is grasped properly. If it can be said that the patriarchal crisis is eliminated through ‘Making a Bad Woman’ and ‘Evicting a Bad Woman’ among the family novels of the latter half of the Lee Dynasty, an idealistic patriarch appears, gets immature males trained and establishes them as new patriarchs. In the Story of Oyuran, the man who plays the role of patriarch is Kim, Saeng. Kim, Saeng is a character who is different from patriarchs described in other novels on unchastity in that he is self-indulgent and delinquent. If one recalls the reality of the Lee Dynasty of the mid-to-late 19th century when the Story of Oyuran, he or she can find the cause of shabbiness and lethargy. Kim, Saeng and Lee, Saeng try to cover up the shabbiness through laughs. A laugh also performs the function for peacemaking and harmony. A satirical laugh is a productive one to remedy contradictions but the one that acts as a harmonizer also becomes a means of simply evading the situation, not a harmony if it is not the situation in which problems are not solved. The laugh occurring between Kim, Saeng and Lee, Saeng is a secret one that covers up problems and is shared with a conspirator. Oyuran asks them to be responsible. Oyuran is in a position different from that of other gisaengs who are masterminded by males as shown in other novels on unchastity. In this respect, Oyuran, an uncomfortable existence, fades without any reason at the end of the work. Though the Story of Oyuran is an interesting novel since the dwarfed self-consciousness of the male of a noble birth of the times is reflected in it, it is a novel with which male readers feel very uncomfortable, too. In order to shun away this serious and uncomfortable situation, laughs are necessary. Thus far, the Story of Oyuran has been studied as a novel full of humors and jests, but the meaning the laugh has is understood in the course of heroes’ growth, the multi-lateral meanings will be able to be found.

『오유란전』은 소설 속에서 발생하는 웃음의 의미를 다면적으로 이해해야 작품의 의미를 온전히 이해할 수 있다. 본 논문은『오유란전』을 남성윤리를 서사화한 성장담의 맥락에서 이해하고자 한다. 성장담은 보편적으로 존재하는 이야기 양식이지만, 현실의 변화와 밀접한 관계를 지닌, 역사성을 담은 이야기 양식이다. 소설의 주인공 김생과 이생의 성장 의미를 제대로 파악해야만 이 소설에서 발생하는 웃음의 의미를 파악할 수 있다. 조선후기의 가문소설에서는 ‘악녀만들기’와 ‘악녀퇴출’을 통해 가부장적 위기를 의사(擬似) 해소한다. 훼절소설에서는 이상적인 아버지가 등장하여 미성숙한 남성을 단련시키고 그들을 강한 남성으로 세움으로써 위기를 의사 해소한다. 남성 주인공이 실수를 하더라도 위기로 이어지지 않고, 위기를 위기로 느낄 수 없는 것은 그들 뒤에 있는 아버지가 있기 때문이다.『오유란전』에서 아버지의 역할을 하는 것은 평양감사인 김생이다. 김생은 방종하고 타락한 인물이라는 점에서 다른 훼절소설에서 그려지는 아버지와는 다르다. 김생이 이생에게 보여주고자 하는 것은 그들의 초라함과 무기력함이다. 그것은 소설 밖의 현실과 조응하는데,『오유란전』이 향유되던 시기인 19세기 중후반의 조선의 현실을 떠올려본다면 초라함과 무기력함의 원인을 알 수 있다. 김생과 이생은 웃음을 통해 자신들의 무기력함을 덮어두려고 한다. 웃음은 풍자적인 기능을 하기도 하고, 화해와 화합의 기능을 수행하기도 한다. 풍자적인 웃음은 모순을 교정하기 위한 생산적인 웃음이지만, 화해의 기능을 수행하는 웃음은, 문제가 해결되지 않는 상황이라면 화합이 아니라 단순히 상황을 모면하는 방편이 되기도 한다. 김생과 이생 사이에서 발생하는 웃음은 문제를 덮어버리는, 공모자 사이에서 나누는 은밀한 웃음이다. 오유란은 공모자인 이들에게 책임을 묻는다. 책임을 묻는다는 점에서 오유란은 다른 훼절소설에서 보이는 남성에 의해 조종되는 기생들과는 다른 위치에 있다. 이런 점에서 작품의 말미에는 불편한 존재인 오유란은 사라진다. 『오유란전』에는 당대 남성 사대부들의 왜소해진 자의식이 투영되기 있기에 재미있는 소설임에도 불구하고, 남성 독자들에게는 매우 불편한 소설이기도 하다. 심각하고 불편한 상황을 모면하기 위해서는 웃음이 필요하다. 그동안『오유란전』은 골계와 해학이 넘치는 소설로서 연구되었지만, 웃음이 지니고 있는 의미를 주인공의 성장과정 속에서 이해한다면 다층적인 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
