Although there has been a long history of skincare from ancient times, it's not until 1991 that it started to be systemized into practical studies named esthetology and to be taught in colleges. So the academic history of esthetology isn't yet over 20 years, and it's not easy for esthetology to be recognized as a separate learning due to such a relatively short academic history, and the fact that it is practical studies built on fundamental studies makes it difficult as well. However, there seems no problem with the development of esthetology in colleges as practical studies and discipline if the subjects and purpose of research on that are evidently differentiated from those of research on the other studies and if that has a unique system of knowledge. The purpose of this study was to examine the unique subjects and purpose of research on esthetology and to present three challenges for that. One is building the independence of esthetology as a separate learning through the segmentation of major courses, and another is the development of college courses(and textbooks) that reinterpret fundamental studies from a perspective of esthetology. The third is the improvement of the status of estheticians. The achievement of the three challenges is expected to make a contribution to creating the unique knowledge system of esthetology, and this study is meaningful in that it tried to justify the value of esthetology as one of separate and promising disciplines that deserve teaching in colleges.

피부미용행위에 대한 역사는 고대에서부터 이어지지만 그것을 피부미용학이라는 학문으로 체계화시켜 실용학문으로서 대학에 영역을 구축하기 시작한 것은 1991년도 이후 부터이다. 그러하기에 피부미용학의 학문적 역사는 20년이 체 지나지 않는다. 이와 같이 피부미용학이 비교적 짧은 학문적 역사를 가지고 있고 기초학문에 바탕을 둔 실용학문이라는 점에서 다른 어떤 학문보다 독자성을 정당화시키고 인정받는 데에 어려움을 격고 있다. 그러나 피부미용학의 연구대상과 연구목적이 다른 학문과 분명히 구별되는 중점을 가지고 있고, 그와 더불어 피부미용학만이 가지고 있는 고유한 지식체계가 있다면 독자성을 정당화시킬 뿐 만 아니라 실용학문으로서 하나의 분과학문으로 대학에서 영역을 구축하고 발전하는 데에 문제가 없다고 본다. 이에 본 연구는 피부미용학의 연구대상과 연구목적의 독자성을 찾아내고, 피부미용학만의 고유한 지식체계를 구체화 시킬 수 있는 당면과제 3가지(첫째. 전공의 세분화를 통한 독자성 확립, 둘째. 기초학문을 피부미용학적으로 재해석한 교과목(교재)의 개발, 셋째. 피부미용관리사의 위상 확립)를 제시함 으로써 피부미용학이라는 학문이 대학 내에서 독자적인 분과학문으로 영역을 구축하고 성장해 나가기에 부족함이 없다는 것을 밝히는 데에 의의를 가지고 있다.
