Recently, the importance of writing courses has been greatly emphasized as many four-year universities maintain or reinforce their related courses as a required general education class. In this regard, the present paper analyzed university writing textbooks by classifying them into four categories and summarizing their characteristics, and then it made recommendations for improvement based on the detected problems. According to their general tendencies, the textbooks were classified into four categories, each of which is centered on: 1)the curriculum 2)the fields of studies, 3)the themes and 4)the development of logical reasoning skills. It was found that each category of books had both merits and demerits. To improve the quality of writing textbooks by making up for the found defects, this paper stresses that textbooks for writing courses should be written in a way that: encourages active interactions between the professor and the students; fits to the needs and levels of students; promotes balanced improvement of both reasoning and language skills; and trains integrated thinking and writing skills.

최근 대학에서는 글쓰기 관련 과목이 교양 필수 과목으로 유지, 강화되면서 그 중요성이 더욱 부각되고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 대학에서의 글쓰기 교재들을 네 가지의 경향으로 분류하여 특성을 추출하고 문제점을 짚어본 후 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 현재 대학 글쓰기 교재들은 과정 중심적 교재, 계열별 글쓰기 교재, 주제 중심적 교재, 논증적 추론 능력 계발 중심의 교재 등으로 나뉘는데, 각각 장단점을 지니고 있었다. 이들을 보완하고 개선하려면, 첫째, 학생과 교수가 활발히 소통할 수 있는 수업을 위한 교재가 되어야 한다. 강의식으로 지식을 전달하는 방식에 어울리는 교재에서 벗어나 수업 시간에 상호 소통하면서 글쓰기의 실제를 경험할 수 있도록 배려하는 교재가 필요하다. 둘째, 학생들의 요구와 능력에 맞는 교재를 만들어야 한다. 최근의 교재들에서는 다양한 예문들이 제시되고 있는데, 대학 1학년생에게는 지나치게 어렵거나 생소한 글들이 많다. 따라서 그들의 눈높이에 맞는 예문으로 적절히 구성해야 하며, 학생들이 요구하는 방식인 실습 수업이 가능하도록 구성되어야 할 것이다. 셋째로는 언어 구사력과 논리력을 조화롭게 향상시킬 수 있는 교재를 만들어야 한다. 최근 몇몇 교재들은 주제 중심적 접근, 논증적 추론 교육의 비중을 늘림으로써 언어 구사력 교육의 면을 축소하고 있는데, 특히 자연계열이나 예체능계열의 학생들은 언어 구사력이 낮아 글쓰기에 어려움을 겪고 있는 현실을 감안하여 그 비중을 축소해서는 안 된다. 넷째, 통합적인 사고와 글쓰기를 훈련할 수 있는 교재를 만들어야 한다. 글쓰기가 학생들에게 실용적인 측면에서 요구되기는 하지만 여기에서 그칠 것이 아니라 통합적이고 깊이 있는 사고가 가능할 수 있도록 전계열을 망라한 교양교육의 일환으로 자리해야 한다는 것이다. 따라서 계열별로 분리된 교재보다는 모든 계열에서 함께 사용할 수 있는 교재가 바람직하다.
