This study examines the Lime Soil Mixture Burials(L.S.M.B.) excavated due to the large-scale housing developments which took place in Seoul, Korea. A comparative study is undertaken on the L.S.M.B of the Eunpyeong Newtown 2-B site and Sinnae-dong site.In the Early Joseon period, L.S.M.B were generally used by the sadaebu(the ruling class), but this type of burial also came to be used, in some cases, by the wealthy urban class, following a certain time lapse. This paper examines how the large L.S.M.B clusters came to be formed at each site based on the textual records of the Joseon dynasty. It is confirmed that L.S.M.B. could only be used 4 kilometers beyond the perimeter of the capital city(城底十里). The lime-plastered walls of the L.S.M.B were examined in cross-section in order to identify the construction method of the burial. The results of the study indicate that L.S.M.B were made using a variety of methods which have previously been identified. The construction methods were classified into three main types and comparisons were made between the L.S.M.B of Eunpyeong 2-B and Sinnae-dong.

본고는 서울 지역의 대규모 택지개발에 따른 발굴 조사에서 확인된 회곽묘에 대하여 고찰하였다. 분석대상은 서울 은평 뉴타운 2-B공구와 신내동에서 조사된 회곽묘를 중심으로 두 지역의 회곽묘 양상을 비교ㆍ검토하였다. 회곽묘는 주로 조선시대에 조성되는 것으로 일반적으로 사대부의 묘제로 알려져 있다. 은평과 신내동 유적에서 이러한 회곽묘가 군을 이루며 조성된 배경을 고문헌을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과 당시 조선시대 행정구역의 특성상 성저십리 외곽인 이 지역에 묘군이 조성될 수 밖에 없었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 발굴조사에서 확인된 회곽묘는 축조방법을 확인하고자 회곽을 절개하여 단면을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 회곽묘는 기존에 알려진 것과는 다르게 다양한 축조방법으로 조성되었다는 것을 확인하였다. 회곽묘의 축조방법을 3개의 유형으로 구분한 뒤 은평 뉴타운 2-B공구와 신내동에서 확인된 회곽묘 양상을 비교하였다.
