Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) have recently been very popular as green solvents
due to their unique physicochemical properties of negligible vapot pressure, non-flammability, excellent thermal stability and a strong ability to dissolve a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds1). They have great potential as reaction media or co-solvent for biocatalysis and biotransformation2). There are many examples where the use of ILs improves activity, selectivity, and stability of enzyme. After giving a short overview on the application of ILs in biotechnology, the following topics will be covered in the presentation: Biocatalysis in ILs, bioseparation in ILs, recovery of ILs and toxicity of ILs.
