Previously we reported HeLa cell growth-promoting effect of Bombyx mori paralytic peptide (BmPP). BmPP is a multifunctional cytokine-like peptide consisting of 23 amino acid residues. It has been reported that the core region of BmPP shows a striking similarity to the C-terminal β-loop domain of epidermal growth factor (EGF). Its structural similarity to EGF suggests that BmPP promotes HeLa cell growth via the EGF receptors. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are by far the most commonly used production vehicles for recombinant glycoproteins. Recombinant CHO (rCHO) cells producing human EPO were used in this study. When BmPP is added to the culture medium in concentration of 10-9M, 10-8M and 10-7M, BmPP prolonged longevity of rCHO cells in serum-free medium. It is considered that the structural similarity between BmPP and EGF may lead to the interaction of BmPP to EGF receptor of rCHO cells to prolong longevity of the cells.
