Mussel adhesive proteins have been suggested as a basis for environmentally friendly adhesives in aqueous conditions and in medicine. Previously, we produced functional recombinant hybrid mussel adhesive protein fp-151 that is a fusion protein comprising six-repeated fp-1 decapeptide repeats at both each terminus of fp-5 terminus. Here, we produced a recombinant fp-151, which was secreted in culture broth, in baculovirus/insect Sf-9 cell expression system, and compared its production and characteristics with E. coli-based fp-151. These assays showed recombinant fp-151 from insect cell culture has significant adhesive ability and may be useful as a bioadhesive in medical or underwater environments.
