The loss of parkin function decreased the proliferation rate of glial cells.1,2) The lower glutathione peroxidase activity observed in parkin knock out (KO) glial cultures can be compensated by an elevation of glutathione. In response to oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide treatment, the Fenton reaction seems to be more activate in parkin deficient glial cells. In addition, when serum deprived from culture medium, parkin deficient glial cells release more hydrogen peroxide to the medium than wild type glial cells, suggesting a link between parkin protein and the reactive oxygen species generation.
