The main purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school students experiences of formal and non-formal English education. In particular, the study focuses on examining how the use of technology affects the students' perceptions and motivation to learn English. In order to gain in-depth insights into the students' experiences, the study adopted the case study method. A small group of elementary school children and their teachers were observed and interviewed. It was found that the non-formal English education had positive impact on the students' learning experiences in school. It was also shown that the students' perception of technology and its usefulness depends on the content and quality of lessons delivered through technology, not the technology per se. Implications for future research and education are discussed.

이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 학생들이 공교육과 사교육을 통해 경험하는 영어교육을 조사하는 것이다. 특히, 본 연구는 정보기술 활용을 통한 영어교육이 학생들의 영어공부에 대한 인식 및 학습동기에 미치는 영향을 중점적으로 연구했다. 학생들의 경험을 깊이 있게 조사하기 위하여 소수의 학생을 집중적으로 연구하는 사례연구방법을 적용하였으며, 수업 참관, 질문지, 인터뷰 조사 등을 실시했다. 본 연구에는 모두 11명의 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생과 두 명의 영어 담당 교사가 참여했다. 연구의 결과에 따르면, 학생들이 학원이나 과외 등을 통해 경험하는 영어교육은 학교에서의 영어 학습을 지루하게 하거나 방해하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 오히려 학생들은 학교 밖에서의 영어교육 경험이 학교에서의 영어 학습을 돕는다고 생각하는 것으로 조사되었다. 정보기술 활용을 통한 영어교육의 경우, 정보기술 자체보다는 정보기술을 통해 전달되는 교육내용이나 지도 방법이 학생들의 영어교육에 대한 인식 및 동기에 더 많은 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
