Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) causes acute lung injury (ALI) and contributes to inflammation in the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis, making mechanisms of resistance to LPS critically important in clinical settings. Ulmus davidiana Planch (Ulmaceae) has long been known to have anti-inflammatory and protective effects on damaged tissue, inflammation. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of Ulmus davidiana Planchextract(UDE) and dexamethasone on ARDS induced by LPS. Rats in the LPS group followed by intraperitoneal of LPS 7 mg/kg body weight. Rats received Ulmus davidiana extract (1g/kg/day) by gavage for 3days and at the end of this period they were injected LPS, and 10-7M dexamethasone by intraperitoneally (i.p.) starting 10 min prior to LPS administration. UDE and dexamethasone abrogated the extent of endotoxin-induced ARDS, as evidenced by the decreases BAL nitrate/nitrite, BALF protein and lung pathology. These results suggested the effects of UDE on LPS-induced inflammation and the involvement of inhibition of the plasma TNF-α and NO levels and an increase in anti-inflammation enzyme activity in these effects. The plasma AST and ALT levels after administration were significantly lower in the UDE group than in the saline groups, and that in the LPS groups. These results suggested the

davidiana Planch extract is effective in reducing LPS-induced ARDS.
