Butanol as an alternative to gasoline has been shown many advantages over ethanol such as low vapor pressure, high energy content, and synergy with ethanol. Although starch-based substrates are preferred for the butanol fermentation, non-food, cost effective and long-term supplied substrates must be considered in order to make butanol fermentation as a viable option among alternative fuels. Recently, studies on butanol production from woods, algae and agricultural wastes have been widely carried on. Those substrates containing polymeric carbohydrates were processed using hydrolysis to produce monomeric fermentable sugars such as glucose and xylose. As all other hydrolyzates, hydrolyzates of woods and algae contain a mixture of a variety of carbohydrates and efficient conversion of the mixed carbohydrate into butanol would be challengeable due to bacterial substrate preference. Therefore, understanding of carbohydrate utilization by solventogenic clostridia need to be done. In this study, we report that product profiles of ABE fermentation using different carbohydrates and carbohydrate mixtures: hexoses (glucose, galactose), pentoses (xylose, arabinose), a disaccharide (sucrose) and mixtures of each.
