TCE has been widely used as a degrease agent or solvent, however, it has become one of the most important groundwater pollutants due to improper treatment or disposal1). Since TCE affects the human nervous system, exposure to the very high levels of TCE may cause unconsciousness leading to death. People who inhale TCE of moderate levels might suffer from headaches, dizziness, or impaired ability to perform, and exposure at high level can cause
liver and kidney damage2). A biofilter inoculated with Pseudomonas putida F1 was operated using toluene as a primary substrate to investigate the cometabolism of TCE. To find the kinetics of TCE biodegradation, the kinetic constant and rate variation of TCE biodegradation were observed at varying conditions of toluene inflow. When toluene vapor was not supplied, TCE
biodegradation efficiency exponentially decreased due to exhaustion of biodegradation enzyme. The TCE biodegradation efficiency (E) increased with the load ratio of TCE to toluene (L) following a relationship, E = 6.23lnL + 33.15. The maximum specific degradation rate and half saturation constant for TCE, which were obtained through saturation kinetic analysis, turned out to be 5.94 ㎍/g protein․min, and 141 ㎍/L, respectively.
