Utilization of various plant materials for biosynthesis of nanoparticles is considered to be a green
technology as it does not involve any harmful chemicals. A smart choice lies on selection of
cheap, environmentally safe and abundantly available plant material. In the present study
synthesis of silver nanoparticles from silver precursor is reported using tuber powder and extract
of novel Curcuma longa. Water soluble organics present in the plant materials were mainly
responsible for reduction of silver ions to nano-sized silver particles. pH plays a major role in size control of the particles and higher pH favored higher production of silver nanoparticles. Tuber
extract produced more silver nanoparticles when compared to the powder as such, which may be attributed to the large availability of the reducing agents in the extract. Zeta potential studies
showed that the surface charge of the formed nanoparticles was highly negative and it increased
with increase in pH. Immobilization of the nanoparticles onto cotton cloth was successful and
leaching studies showed the nanoparticles were stable for several cycles with good bactericidal
activity. Thus Curcuma longa tuber extract and powder pose to be good biomaterials for
synthesis of silver nanoparticles.
