A variety of biodegradable polymers (BPs) made of renewable and/or fossil resources are available today. Although the current market of BPs is not matured, considering environmental concerns, it should be of consequence in near future. For instance, the consumption of BPs in the EU was approximately 20-30 tons/year in 2001 but it is expected to increase up to 1.1 ktons/year by 2010. Certification scheme of BPs, entitled "Products made of compostable
materials", applies to products for which application is made for certification and for a licence to mark them with the compostability logo from DIN CERTCO. It further applies to polymeric materials, intermediates and additives, for which registration is applied for, and to the issue of confirmations of acceptability for products made of compostable materials. It enables biodegradable/compostable products to be identified by a unique mark for recovery of their constituent materials in proper ways. The compostability logo is given to final products to
be sold, which can be raw materials, intermediates and additives, after proper testing for biodegradability by international certification bodies.
