Hydrogen gas was produced from undefined bacterial cultures in anaerobic condition, using
marine algae as carbon source. Various marine algae of Ulva lactuca, Porphyra tenera, Undaria
pinnatifida and Laminaria japonica were studied in the fermentation process. The effect of
pretreatment of various marine algae for hydrogen production was investigated. The
pretreatment includes grinding, heating, ultrasonication, acid and alkali treatments. After
pretreatments, organic matters of various marine algae were solubilized and soluble chemical
oxygen demand (SCOD) of grinded and heat (120℃ for 30min) treated Laminaria japonica
showed the maximum value. The optimal condition for hydrogen fermentation process were
demonstrated to be at 35℃ for 144 hr. At this culture condition, the highest hydrogen yield was
achieved as 12% when Laminaria japonica was used as carbon source. The optimal substrate
concentration of Laminaria japonica was 50 g/L. As a result, the optimum substrate of marine
algae for hydrogen production was chosen as laminaria japonica.
