The study was to obtain high quality biodiesel from a microalga, Nitzschia sp. through the control of light/dark cycles. Metabolic controlling for both autotrophic and heterotrophic growth of Nitzchia sp. was applied, under heterotrophic cultivation, Nitzschia sp. contained the crude lipid content of 48%. To increase the biomass and lipid products, 12:12 light/dark cycle was applied in a 5L fermenter.
The total density significantly increased, under this condition, as 12 g/ℓ of the highest cell concentration. This microalgal oil was efficiently extracted by n-hexane using. The lipid from this alga was characterized as 22% of unsaturated fatty acid (C18-C24) and 26% of saturated fatty acid (C12-C24). The method has great potential in the industrial production of liquid fuel from microalga.
