Microglia activation and release of nitric oxide (NO) have recently emerged as a key event mediating pathological cell damage in many neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we examined possible anti-inflammatory effects of rosmarinic acid (RA), a naturally occurring hydroxylated polyphenolic compound in various herbs, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NO production in BV-2 mouse microglial cells. Pretreatment of microglial cells with RA (50 uM) for 1 h
resulted in a significant decrease in LPS-induced NO production. In addition, LPS-induced upregulation of iNOS and interferon-β (IFN-β) expression was significantly attenuated by RA. These results suggest that RA may provide therapeutic benefits for suppression of inflammatory-related injury in neurodegenerative diseases.
