Water-in-oil(W/O) micro-emulsions can be prepared using sorbitan monooleate (Span80),
polyoxyethylene 20 sorbitan monooleate (Tween80), decane and water1). The stability of the
emulsion and the boundaries between opaque and transparent emulsion, largely depends on
its water content2). Therefore, we investigated that stability of micro-emulsion by a
multiple light scattering method3) using Turbiscan™. The water contained 2% fibroin by
weight in this experiment.
The maximum water contents for micro-emulsion were identified. The maximum water
fraction by volume was approximately 7.5% for a decane based micro-emulsion with 7.0
HLB. Squalane based W/O emulsion showed decreased boundary water fractions. However,
the HLB at highest water fraction did not altered.
Emulsions were prepared from decane and Squalane with varying the ratio of Span80 to
Tween80. Turbiscan observation revealed that slow aggregation of oil droplets was
observed for the emulsion of Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance(HLB) of 9.6, that showed
homogeneous for a prolonged period of time. A stable emulsion in terms of multiple light
scattering was observed at 7.0 HLB when the ratio of Span80 to Tween80 was 3:1 for
decane and water volumes of 16ml and 2ml, respectively.
