Cofactor-dependent enzymes are very useful to synthesize high value-added chemicals. However, cofactors have to be regenerated for economically efficient enzyme process because it is too expensive to stoichiometric use.
Electroenzymatic synthesis is one of the attractive approach, which combines enzyme catalyzed reactions with electrochemical cofactor regeneration. In conventional electroenzymatic reaction, mediators have been used to reduce overpotential and for efficient electron transfer between electrode and cofactors.
However, some kinds of mediators are toxic to enzyme; therefore, it can induce the enzyme deactivation and low process stability. In this study, we suggest a new electrochemical cofactor regeneration system that does not require a mediator. In order to perform mediator-free reaction, tin oxide which prepared by anodization and annealing method was used as a working electrode. The prepared tin oxide electrode was characterized and its performance was tested
under various conditions. By employing tin oxide electrode combined with the enzyme reaction system, various chemicals can be efficiently produced such as chiral alcohol, keto acids, and so on. Details will be presented and discussed.
