Codonopis lanceolata, a perennial herb, belongs to Campanulaceae. Codonopis lanceolata radix has been utilized as a seasonal food and traditional tonic medicine for the past years in korea. Codonopis lanceolata has been known to be effective for the discharge of phlegm, counteracting poison, asthma, phthisis tuberculosis, etc. This study was concentrated to investigate the identification of anti-allergic effect of various extracts from Codonopis lanceolata. We used the
cascade extraction procedure with various solvents from hot-water extract to obtain several solvents fractions and crude saponin from Codonopis lanceolata.
Anti-allergic effect of Codonopis lanceolata based on the production of cytokines and the activation of macrophage was studied. Cytotoxicity was determined from MTT assay. NO production was measured using NO assay. Cytokine was measured using western blot.
