Chondrogenesis of Human Umbilical Cord Blood-derived Multilineage Progenitor Cells in Atelocollagen

Clonogenic multi-lineage progenitor cells (MLPCs) from human umbilical cord blood were successfully differentiated into chondrocytes in atelocollagen gel. Chondrogenic differentiation was confirmed by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence staining for type II collagen protein. Furthermore, osteogenic and adipogenic potential of MLPCs were demonstrated by quantitative real time PCR, alkaline phosphates activity and Oil Red O staining. Therefore, MLPCs can serve as an alternative source for stem cell-based therapy and transplantation with scaffolds.
