The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) has been used successfully to treat a variety of industrial wastewaters. It offers a high degree of organics removal, low sludge production and low energy consumption, along with energy production in the form of biogas. A pilot scale UASB reactor was employed to treat the wastewater of a purified terephthalic acid(PTA) manufacturing factory.
In this study, the biodegradability of pollutant in PTA wasteawater and the influence of cationic polymer on sludge granulation and the associated reactor performance was evaluated in full-scale UASB reactor. Therefore comparison of the anaerobic biodegradability of aromatic substituents in PTA wastewater was concluded as the following sequence: -COOH > -CHO > -CH3 in terms of the derivative fuctional groups based on the benzoic acid. Also acetic acid and
benzoic acid were found to inhibit the biodegradation of terephthalic acid for batch-toxicity experiments. One of the major constituents, p-toluic acid was not biodegradation due to the methyl substituent on the aromatic ring. In addition, the effect of cationic polyacrylamide polymer additives on biomass granulation and performance of UASB reactor had been examined in full-scale UASB reactors. Adding the cationic polymer could result in enhancement of granulation,
which may in turn lead to improvement in the efficiency of organics removal and loading capacity of the UASB system. Moreover, it could result in increasing of biogas production.
