Effective Microorganisms(EM) consist of ten genera and eighty different species1). Recent studies show that EM can degrade the petroleum in petroleumcontaminated soil. Sphingobacterium sp. WY which also disintegrate the petroleum, especially diesel, was isolated in petroleum-contaminated site2). The objective of this study is bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated site by using both EM and Sphingobacterium sp. WY3). First of all, we have examined the symbiosis of EM and Sphingobacterium sp. WY by mixed culture. EM and
Sphingobacterium sp. WY were cultured at 30℃ in modified LB medium with 150rpm in shaking incubator for 72hr. Consequently, cell concentration in mixed culture was higher than each pure culture. This result implies that they can live commensally, in other words, there is no inhibition between EM and Sphingobacterium sp. WY. The synergy effect of EM and Sphingobacterium sp.
WY on their petroleum-degrading activities was also investigated.
