A SAPS is a pond containing a combination of limestone and compost overlain to treat acid mine drainage. Spent mushroom compost has been used for developing sulfate reducing bacteria in the passive treatment system. However, the amount of residual substrate for the microbial consortium is hard to estimate. In this report, estimation of the residual substrate was made by analyzing chemical compositions and by accelerated hydrogen sulfide production in environmentally controlled condition. By analysis of the samples from the compost overlain of 18 SAPSs, the residual TOC and cellulose equivalent showed a poor correlation with the ages of SAPS. Accelerated hydrogen sulfide production using minimal media agree well with the residual components in the compost samples.
